The films of David Fincher
David Fincher’s THE GAME set to be released on Criterion blu-ray in September! REJOICE!!!
There’s this feeling during the sexual assault sequences in TGWTDT that really remind me of IRREVERSIBLE. Rough. Shocking. Discomforting. More than just the images on screen. More than just the emotional resonance of what is happening. There is some odd undercurrent that makes it really make an impact. I was finally able to put my finger on it. You see, the director of IRREVERSIBLE, Gaspar Noe, added a really low decibel bass track under all of the shocking sequences in his film. They say when you hear a low enough bass rumble, it can cause mild nausea. Mixed with the images onscreen, audience members reportedly fled theaters during showings of IRREVERSIBLE. The scoring during TGWTDT’s brutal sequences are just as jarring. There is a rumble of bass and a screeching whistle. The sound is off-kilter. It’s not music. It is an odd concoction of noises. It’s an overload of the senses.
Fincher and Noe are not directors of exploitation films. They use every element to help put together well-crafted material. These scenes are meant to be shocking. Meant to be off-putting. Fincher and Noe do not add a glossy finish to these sequences. They want you to feel abused. Pained. Hurt. Hurt for the characters.
I consistently defend Fincher’s TGWTDT when talking to others. It works for me. Is it a necessary remake? No. What remake is? But does it work? Does it adequately build upon the source material while bringing something to the table that makes it relevant in its own right? Yes. Rooney Mara’s Lisbeth is an exceptional character. The battle can go on for ages as to who is better, Noomi or Rooney, and there will never be a consensus. That we’re debating film so thoroughly and thoughtfully is enough to make me smile and think that that is reason enough.
Didn’t really talk that much about IRREVERSIBLE I guess. Ah well. I respect it, as difficult as it is to watch. Saying I “like” it is tough. There is an interesting, well-made film there, shocking as it may be.
A Gift From Lisbeth

You’re such an inspiration
For the ways that I will
Never, ever choose to be
Oh so many ways for me to show you
How your savior has abandoned you
Fuck your God, your Lord, your Christ
He did this, took all you had and
Left you this way, still you pray, never stray, never
Taste of the fruit, never thought to question “Why?”
It’s not like you killed someone
It’s not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you…
He did it all for you…
